When I was a kid growing up in Newport, Vermont, my favorite mode of transportation was my bicycle, a heavy, three-speed Western Flyer that I purchased with my own money earned from my paper route. I often rode from Newport to St. Johnsbury, a 100-mile round-trip, in a single day. Being adventurous even at age 13, I decided to ride my Western Flyer to Tewksbury, Massachusetts to visit my older sister. I almost made it; I was only 20 miles away from her house when I was hit by a hit-and-run driver. I recovered, but, I'm sorry to say, the Western Flyer did not.

That was in 1962. Although I continued to ride a bicycle off-and-on throughout my adult life, I recently became interested in bicycling on a grand scale. I decided to bike across the country from Seatle Washington back to Suffield, Connecticut, asking for pledges to benefit Danielle Caldwell.

This website is about my experiences and what I learned on my shorter trips while preparing for my big adventure, my trip across the United states while "Cycling Over 50."
